THOR ABOUT THE EDITION - NANBAN
"The correct translation of nanban from Japanese reads "Barbarian south" and refers to the goods that came from South Asia and especially Korea. In Japan I had it explained to me that in a later period it came to mean everything that came across the sea and especially with the Europeans. Today, it has become synonymous with the jar lids that were originally made as utility items in Korea and that appealed to the Japanese bonsai masters because of their primitive beauty and ultimate suitability for the literati style. To me, nanban has come to mean "primitive elegance". Much like the expression a potter casually marks his work with, when he cuts the pot off the throwing wheel and leaves it to dry with the thought in his head that he has created something functional with his cultural touch, without any thoughts on impressing. Even though this is not the way I have worked, that's the expression I have wanted to achive."
